Ces Cru formed in Kansas City in 2000, and until recently, consisted of Godemis and UBI (formerly known as Ubiquitous), who have been the group's sole members for a number of years, although this was not always the case. The lineup fluctuated over the years until Godemis, Sorceress, and UBI were the only remaining members, and they released their debut album, Capture Enemy Soldiers, in 2004 with this lineup. While promoting the album, Sorceress disagreed with Godemis and Ubi on whether or not to keep the group's then-manager, and departed the group, leaving the lineup as a duo, where it has remained since. Their 2009 album The Playground led to them opening for Devin the Dude, where they met Tech N9ne and gave him a copy of the album. This led to them making appearances on Tech's XXL-hosted mixtape Bad Season and signing to his label, Strange Music, where they have so far released 3 albums and 2 EPs as well as a solo mixtape each. Their 5th album and 3rd for Strange, 2017's Catastrophic Event Specialists, landed them on the Billboard albums chart in the Top 40.

Godemis and UBI signed solo contracts with Strange Music after Catastrophic Event Specialists which would lead to UBI's 2018 solo album Under Bad Influence and was supposed to lead to Godemis's planned 2020 solo album, Deestro, however, behind the scenes issues with Godemis seem to have led to the cancellation of the album, and Tech N9ne confirmed in an Instagram comment that he was no longer with the label. The album was partially released in several EPs to streaming services, but is currently shelved. Around this same time, UBI seemed to confirm that Ces Cru was currently defunct, and also announced his departure from Strange Music in 2021 to begin his first solo and independent venture.
