Although he reps Detroit most vocally, the biggest star in hip hop music spent much of his childhood in Missouri, being born in St. Joseph and living at times in St. Joseph, Savannah, and Kansas City. Em was born to musician parents who separated early in his life, and he lived a troubled childhood, moving a lot while coping with bullying, his abandonment by his father, and his mother's purported drug issues, a time period often discussed in Em's music. Eventually, Em and his mother Debbie Briggs moved to Detroit, where he has lived ever since. Em's home life was always unstable, and when his mother allowed a teen runaway, Kim Scott, to move into their home, Em began a relationship with her and eventually married her.

Em began rapping at the age of 14, as he and friend Mike Ruby (performing as Manix) began sneaking into a neighboring high school for lunchtime rap battles with another friend, DeShaun Holton (known as Proof). They began attending open mic contests at the famous Hip Hop Shop, Detroit's most well-known hip hop stable. Eventually, Em dropped out of high school, and by 1988, M&M (as he was then known) began performing as MC Double M and formed his first group, New Jacks, along with DJ Butter Fingers. By 1989 they joined Bassmint Productions, which included Proof, and changed their name to Soul Intent, producing a few local releases which are now collector's items. By 1996, Proof and Eminem had formed their group Dirty Dozen, later to become famous as D12. That same year Em signed to the Bass Brothers' FBT Productions and released his debut, Infinite, which was markedly differently lyrically and sonically than the material for which he would later become known, as Em's style contained obvious influence from the likes of AZ and Nas. This album was not commercially successful, and he was the subject of mockery from some local DJs who didn't believe he could be taken seriously as a white MC. Em's frustration came out in his later music, as his subject matter become darker, angrier, and more violent, leading to Em developing his sadistic alter ego, Slim Shady. He recorded his Slim Shady EP in 1997, which led to more positive attention for Em, who now stood out from the crowd for his provocative, violent lyrics. That same year, he competed in the 1997 Rap Olympics in Los Angeles, coming in second place to Chicago MC Juice. The success of Slim Shady and the Rap Olympics showing led to Em receiving attention from national hip hop publication The Source and a coveted feature in their Unsigned Hype column in March 1998, as well as the eye of an Interscope Records intern who attended the show. This attention would be game-changing for Em in different ways.

On the positive side, the Interscope intern passed a copy of Slim Shady to Interscope CEO Jimmy Iovine, who played the tape for legendary hip hop producer Dr. Dre. Dre, who later said he had never before or since signed an artist based on a demo tape, instructed Interscope to contact Eminem immediately as he wanted to sign him to his label Aftermath Entertainment. On the negative side, when Eminem's music began to get national attention, The Source cofounder Benzino, himself an aspiring rapper, had begun to use his influence on the magazine to promote his own music, and when the magazine gave negative reviews to his Aftermath debut The Slim Shady LP, Em began to antagonize the publication, first for their tepid response to his music, critically acclaimed elsewhere, and then later toward Benzino personally after he began to respond to Eminem's criticisms with his own on-wax disses, which the magazine then promoted. This feud would last many years and encompass many figures in the hip hop industry until Benzino's eventual ouster.

Eminem's debut album, The Slim Shady LP, would go on to be certified triple platinum, and his follow-up, The Marshall Mathers LP, would go platinum in its first week on shelves, cementing Em as a pop music superstar. Em's lyrics would frequently come under public scrutiny in the years to come, due to his personal attacks on various famous figures, lyrics featuring violent, misogynistic, and homophobic content, and many well-publicized feuds with family members, fellow artists, and other public figures, but Em has remained a cultural force. Despite a 5-year hiatus from releasing new music following the murder of his best friend Proof and a battle with addiction, Em's albums have received commercial and critical acclaim, albeit with some diminishing returns in recent years on both fronts. Among his career accomplishments are an Oscar for his song "Lose Yourself," from the soundtrack to his acting debut 8 Mile, 15 Grammy Awards, 10 consecutive number one albums and 5 number one singles on the Billboard charts, and frequent recognition as one of the greatest rappers of all time. Most recently, Em released Music To Be Murdered By in early 2020, resulting in some of his strongest reviews in many years and a world record for fastest rapping on a hit single.

Eminem also has achieved commercial success with two different groups: D12 (consisting of himself along with Bizarre, Bugz, Denaun, Fuzz Scoota, Kuniva, Proof, and Swifty McVay) and Bad Meets Evil (consisting of himself and Royce 5'9"). Prior to fame, he was also a member of Soul Intent with Chaos Kid.
