Fat Tone was raised in the 51st Street neighborhood of Kansas City, and began his rise to stardom with his first album, Only In Killa City, in 2002. The album was presented by Bay Area MC Killa Tay, who would be one of many Bay Area artists to cosign Tone. However, controversy would follow Tone everywhere he went. At 22 years old, he was shot, but survived. He was even arrested for the murder of a pregnant woman, but the charges were dropped. The rumor mill connected Tone to multiple Kansas City area murders, but he seemed--and believed himself to be--untouchable.

Tone released follow-up projects in each successive year after his debut, but a rumored beef with Bay rapper Mac Dre became his real claim to fame. In November 2004, Dre was murdered on Highway 71 in Kansas City, and suspicion fell on Tone, although police cleared him in the murder and did not consider him a suspect--Tone even denied responsibility in a song, although other lyrics seemed to connect him to the crime. Nonetheless, in May 2005, Mac Minister, a friend and affiliate of Mac Dre, invited Tone and his friend Jermaine "Cowboy" Akins to Las Vegas to meet and possibly open for Snoop Dogg, but with a more sinister plan in mind. On May 23, police discovered Tone and Akins's bullet-riddled bodies. Tone was slumped over the steering wheel of a car, having been shot around twenty times. Security cameras from the MGM Grand Hotel Tone and Akins were staying in showed them leaving the premises with Minister, and a friend testified that Minister's friend Jason Mathis had confessed privately to their killings. Following a ten-month manhunt, Mac Minister was arrested in 2006 and in 2008 was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of two charges of first degree murder for the deaths of Tone and Akins.
