J-Kwon grew up a troubled youth in St. Louis. Kicked out of his home at 12 for dealing drugs, he drifted between different friends' homes, even sleeping in cars, before getting into rapping. J-Kwon was scouted by Arista Records, and in meeting with them he infamously mooned Arista label head L.A. Reid and mocked rapper/producer Jermaine Dupri. Amused by J-Kwon's antics and impressed with his music, Dupri signed him to his So So Def Recordings, and J-Kwon's first single "Tipsy" became a smash hit when he was just 16 and spawned a remix that featured fellow St. Louisans Chingy and Murphy Lee. The song shot to #2 on the Billboard 200, but follow-up single "You & Me" performed less impressively and subsequent singles flopped.

In 2005, J-Kwon appeared on the soundtrack to XXX: State of the Union and performed the hook for Bow Wow's hit "Fresh Azimiz." After the failure to release any significant singles to follow "Tipsy," J-Kwon eventually left So So Def and self-released his sophomore album, Hood Hop 2. He signed with Gracie Entertainment to distribute his Hood Hop label and released two more albums, Hood Hop 2.5 and J-Kwon, before largely disappearing from the scene. He released a song titled "Pushing the Odds" in 2013 that responded to disses made towards him by Pusha T and OFWGKTA, and has since released mixtape material.
