Kutt Calhoun was born and raised in Kansas City, MO, and has been involved in the local hip hop scene since the late 1990s, recording his first professional track in 1998. Originally known as Cutt Dawg, Calhoun appeared on local compilations alongside his frequent rhyme partner Snug Brim. Kutt and Snug formed the primary membership of the rap collective Deuce Klik, which also featured fellow Kansas Citians BG Bulletwound and Skatterman. Calhoun began working with local star Tech N9ne in the early 2000s, working as Tech's hypeman early on and becoming a major part of Tech's heavily choreographed and dynamic stage show, alongside Krizz Kaliko and for a time, Grant Rice.

Kutt was an integral part of the founding of Tech N9ne's label, Strange Music, signing as one of its first artists and releasing his debut album, among the first on the label not by Tech himself, in 2004, titled B.L.E.V.E. ("Boiling Liquid Expanding Viscous Explosion"). The album landed on the Billboard Heatseekers charts and was well-received, but Strange Music had financial battles over the next several years with distributors, somewhat delaying the release of his sophomore album.

During these next few years, Kutt continued to tour and record with Tech N9ne, self-releasing a mixtape, Flamez, in 2007, and finally putting out his sophomore album with Strange, now truly independent and self-distributed, in 2008. Feature Presentation again charted on the Heatseekers charts and spawned a single and video with "Bunk Rock Bitch."

By 2010, Strange Music was rolling on all cylinders, churning out many successful and acclaimed releases, but Kutt was beginning to show signs of frustration as his sales lagged behind other artists on the label. His third release, Raw and Un-Kutt, featured several big name artists like Joe Budden, Too Short, and E-40, again charting on Heatseekers and the Independent albums charts, but sales were lower than other releases from the label that year, and Kutt and Tech both expressed frustration with the lack of support Kutt received from the Strange fanbase. Rumors spread about Kutt's dissatisfaction with the label, and rapper Jokerr alluded to this in diss tracks aimed at Tech N9ne. Over the next few years, Kutt stopped touring with Tech N9ne, opting instead to tour solo, and released 2 EPs and another LP with Strange Music before deciding to part ways with the label in late 2014.

Kutt's departure was controversial, as his relationship with Tech and the label went back longer than any other artist there, with both Kutt and Tech expressing visibly hurt feelings through interviews and occasional social media flareups involving themselves and other artists such as Snug Brim and BG Bulletwound. Ultimately they publicly made amends and insist they are on amicable terms. Calhoun launched his own label, Black Gold Entertainment, with distribution through Empire Distribution, and released his EP, Kuttin Loose, in 2015. The EP was well-received and got attention from hip hop blogs due to his controversial departure from Strange, and it again charted on Heatseekers. Since then Kutt has yet to release any solo music, citing burnout, but assures fans he is working on a full-length LP, Truth Be Told, as well as a second Flamez mixtape.
