Stevie Stone grew up in Columbia, MO, where he excelled in sports and even earned a scholarship to play basketball for a junior college in Iowa. However, his true love was music, and after opening for fellow Missourian Tech N9ne in his hometown, Stevie decided to turn down the scholarship to pursue a career as a rapper. Influenced by his mother, a church choir director, Stevie drew from Southern and Midwestern hip hop, blues, soul, and gospel to create his musical style and his "Himmi Hyme" movement. The gruff-voiced rapper was eventually discovered by Tomica Wright, the widow of gangsta rapper Eazy-E, who runs the label Eazy founded, Ruthless Records. Stevie was signed to the label in 2007, and his debut album, New Kid Comin, was released in 2009. Although he was grateful for the opportunity he was given at Ruthless, Stevie has hinted that the label was mismanaged, and ultimately he left a few years later to sign with Tech N9ne's Strange Music label in 2011.

In 2012, Stevie released his Strange Music debut, Rollin' Stone, to decent sales, a top 10 position on the Billboard Rap charts, and acclaim. He has since released four more albums for the label, as well as a collaborative album with labelmate JL.

In March 2021, Stevie Stone announced his departure from Strange Music to launch his own label, Ahdasee Records. He released a single titled "Jumping Out the Window" explaining his decision to leave Strange Music, and confirmed on social media he was still close with his former labelmates, including label president Tech N9ne.
