City Spud began his career in the music industry as a member of the hip hop group St. Lunatics, which formed in St. Louis in 1993 and included future superstar Nelly, as well as Kyjuan, Murphy Lee, and Poppa Leezy (then known as Ali) Scoring an independent hit with "Gimme What U Got" in 1997, the St. Lunatics pushed Nelly toward a solo career, believing he had the star power to be signed first and to bring the rest of the group with him. The stars seemed to be lining up for the St. Lunatics when Nelly was signed to his solo contract with Universal Records, but just as he was preparing to release his solo debut, Country Grammar, City Spud was arrested in connection with an armed robbery in 1999. He received a ten-year sentence, derailing his hopes for fame. While City Spud was in prison, Nelly's debut album became a sensation, selling over eight million copies in the United States alone, and a song from the album that featured a verse from City Spud, "Ride Wit Me," became a #3 Billboard hit. The St. Lunatics followed up this success with their first album, titled Free City as a reference to City's incarceration.

In 2008, after serving nine years of his ten-year sentence, City was released from prison. He has since guested on some of his labelmates' songs and released a solo mixtape in 2010 titled Twelve-12, and is currently at work with the St. Lunatics on their long-delayed sophomore album, City Free, a reference to their first album's title and their reunion with City.

In addition to his rap career, City is also a producer who works with the Basement Beats team, a collective that consists of co-founders City, Jason "Jay E" Epperson, Waiel "Wally" Yaghnam, and Jayson "Koko" Bridges, as well as later additions NonStop and Wyshmaster. The team achieved notoriety for their heavy hand in producing for Nelly and various St. Lunatic-affiliated projects, as well as artists ranging from Twista to Tim McGraw.
