The St. Lunatics formed in St. Louis in 1993 and included breakout star Nelly, as well as City Spud, Kyjuan, Murphy Lee, and Poppa Leezy, then known as Ali. Scoring an independent hit with "Gimme What U Got" in 1997, the St. Lunatics pushed Nelly toward a solo career, believing he had the star power to be signed first and to bring the rest of the group with him. When Nelly's debut solo album, Country Grammar, became a smash hit in 2000, the St. Lunatics were introduced to the world as guests on several of the album's tracks, including the single "Batter Up" and the smash hit "Ride Wit Me." Unfortunately, City Spud went to jail on burglary charges almost as soon as Nelly's rise to stardom began and was unable to enjoy the spoils of success for some years afterward. Slo Down joined the group as a mascot in City's absence.

Following the success of Nelly's solo album, the St. Lunatics immediately went to work on a group album, releasing Free City, their major label debut, on June 5, 2001. The album was certified platinum, and the single "Midwest Swing" cracked the Billboard Hot 100, helping to cement the St. Louis hip hop scene's position in the mainstream.

In the years following Free City, the members mostly went about making solo projects. Nelly released four consecutive platinum albums and a gold fifth album, as well as a platinum-certified remix project, and a slew of charting singles, including four #1s on Billboard. Murphy Lee released his gold-certified debut album and he and Nelly won a Grammy for their #1 single "Shake Ya Tailfeather," and the other members made solo efforts as well, with Poppa Leezy releasing both a solo album and a collaborative album with Goodie Mob's Big Gipp, after he and Gipp featured on Nelly's #1 single "Grillz."

By 2009, City Spud had been released from prison, and the members went to work on the group sophomore album, City Free. To date there have been several singles released from the album, although none very successful, and the album does not yet have a release date. Slo Down was dismissed from the group around 2010 due to disputes over his contributions, with Nelly arguing that he didn't put any effort into music or merchandise and Slo arguing that he was never compensated for his touring.

At present day, the St. Lunatics appear to be on hiatus, with no release date for City Free in sight. The individual members have continued their solo work and collaborations on their respective projects. Nelly and Leezy have also recently feuded on social media, putting further doubt into the future of the group.
