Murphy Lee came onto the scene as a member of the hip hop group St. Lunatics, which formed in St. Louis in 1993 and included breakout star Nelly, as well as City Spud, Poppa Leezy (then known as Ali), and Murphy Lee's older brother Kyjuan. Scoring an independent hit with "Gimme What U Got" in 1997, the St. Lunatics pushed Nelly toward a solo career, believing he had the star power to be signed first and to bring the rest of the group with him. When Nelly's debut solo album, Country Grammar, became a smash hit in 2000, the St. Lunatics were introduced to the world as guests on several of the album's tracks, with Murphy Lee himself appearing on four tracks, including the single "Batter Up."

Following the success of Nelly's solo album, the St. Lunatics immediately went to work on a group album, releasing Free City, their major label debut, on June 5, 2001. The album was certified platinum, and the single "Midwest Swing" cracked the Billboard Hot 100, helping to cement the St. Louis hip hop scene's position in the mainstream.

After the St. Lunatics' rise to fame, Murphy Lee stood out as the most popular member of the group after Nelly himself, due to skillful flow and lyrics, charismatic delivery, and youthful charm, as the youngest member of the group (only about 20 when the group made their breakthrough). He made an appearance on the remix of Jermaine Dupri and Ludacris's hit single "Welcome To Atlanta" and on the Bad Boys II soundtrack, on the song "Shake Ya Tailfeather" alongside Diddy and Nelly. "Shake Ya Tailfeather" shot to #1 and set the stage for Murphy's debut album, Murphy's Law. The album reached the Top Ten on Billboard and was certified gold, thanks in part due to the inclusion of "Shake Ya Tailfeather" and it's top 20 lead single "Wat da Hook Gon Be" which featured Jermaine Dupri. In 2004, "Shake Ya Tailfeather" even won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance By a Duo or Group.

Following several music industry shake-ups which saw the sale and reorganization of Universal Records in the late 2000s, the St. Lunatics' individual members were unable to release follow-up albums, and thus Murphy Lee founded his own label, U C Me Entertainment, along with his brother Kyjuan to self-release his sophomore album You See Me in 2009. He also released several mixtapes in the years between his albums. Currently Lee is at work with the rest of the St. Lunatics on their follow-up to Free City to be titled City Free.
