Born in Los Angeles, but raised in El Paso, Texas, and Topeka, Kansas, Emcee N.I.C.E. is a diverse artist who has crossed genres from hip hop to gospel to R&B and funk rock. Beginning his career as a rapper named Novelist, N.I.C.E. got his first big break co-producing a version of 2Pac's song "Thugz Mansion" for his posthumous album Better Dayz, which also led to the song being included on guest rapper Nas's album God's Son. Capitalizing off of this huge start, N.I.C.E. formed his first group, then known as KansasCali. They released their debut album, Vegas One (The Beginning) in 2002, shortly before the release of the 2Pac and Nas albums. They then recorded the theme music for the TV show of NFL legend Emmitt Smith, The Emmitt Zone, and were tapped to perform at the inaugural Billboard Digital Entertainment Awards.

The group was featured on a single from R&B star Aaron Hall a few years later, and followed up with their sophomore release, an EP called Hello World. They also appeared on the debut album of K-Ci (of Jodeci fame) the following year. As time went on, the group landed features on several soundtrack releases and gradually morphed into more of an urban pop rock band, changing their name to Rocturnals.

In 2012, Novelist released his solo debut under the new name Emcee N.I.C.E. (an acronym for Novelist Is Constantly Evolving), an EP titled Way Back Now. The album was promoted by the lead single "Life of the Party," which featured Jus Blake and actress Stacey Dash. Around this time Dash had begun to express her sympathies with Republican politics and conservative causes, endorsing Republican candidate Mitt Romney for president, to which N.I.C.E. attributes the commercial failure of the single, as Dash became persona non grata in the hip hop community after this. He released his solo full-length debut, However U Want It, in 2015.

Currently, N.I.C.E. has embraced acting, appearing in the animated musical series Da Jammies on Netflix since 2015. Throughout the years he has also produced music for many acts in addition to his solo career, including the likes of Doctor Fink (of Prince's band Revolution) and MC Lyte.
