Json was born in St. Louis, MO, and his father passed away when he was 3 years old. His mother moved his family to Los Angeles, CA, but ran into problems with addiction. She moved back to St. Louis, while Json stayed in California. He followed her back to St. Louis a few years later, and followed in her footsteps with drugs and legal trouble.

He ended up marrying his high school sweetheart, Nikki Childress, and together they got clean and found religion. Json joined the Christian hip hop collective 116 Clique, and released his debut album, The Seasoning, in 2005. By his third album, he was landing on the Christian and gospel music charts, something he has done with every subsequent album. Currently, Json and Nikki live in Iowa City, IA, where they are co-directors of the Spot Outreach Ministry of Parkview Church.
