Kansas City rappers Skatterman and Snug Brim, formerly solo artists, came together as a group around 2002, originally under the name Yung Gunz, although this name was dropped due to the concurrent rise in the Philadelphia group Young Gunz, who were signed to Jay-Z's label Roc-a-Fella Records around this time. At one point, it appeared Money Hungry might be a member of Yung Gunz, before they debuted as a duo. Releasing their debut album, Worth a Million, in 2002 and appearing on Tech N9ne's regional smash Absolute Power that same year, they signed to Tech's new label, Strange Music, in 2004. Their Strange debut, Urban Legendz, came out the same year and featured what became their signature song, "Block Party." Due to financial issues, Strange went on something of a hiatus for a few years after this, slowing their output.

In 2006, Tech released his album Everready (The Religion), on which he promoted Skatterman & Snug Brim and revealed that he had been pressuring them to change their name to S.S. for the sake of brevity, although this didn't happen. Their third album, Word On tha Streets, came out in 2008, after which they opted to leave Strange Music, having fulfilled their commitment. Both MCs complained that Strange didn't market their music to their satisfaction, and occasionally traded barbs with Tech N9ne in interviews and on record, for several years after. Skatterman appeared to make nice with the label fairly quickly, making guest appearances on albums by Strange Music artists Kutt Calhoun and Big Scoob and suggesting a collaborative EP with Tech N9ne, while Snug Brim has maintained a tense relationship with the label and its artists, in particular after the controversial departure of Kutt Calhoun from the label, which renewed tensions between Snug Brim and Tech N9ne.

In 2009, Skatterman announced the formation of his label, Bigg Shot Music & Films, with Skatterman serving as president and CEO of the label. Skatterman & Snug Brim indicated that they would release a fourth album, to be titled Perseverance, in 2009, although plans were put on indefinite hiatus when Snug Brim returned to school and solo work. Aside from a few collaborations on their respective solo work and the odd guest appearance, the group has remained mostly dormant since 2008.
