Thi'sl was born in Greenwood, MS, and his family moved with him to St. Louis when he was a baby. He began rapping at 14, originally as Uncle Y, and became involved with gang activity, something that informed his early music. He released a gangsta rap demo before leaving the street life behind, when he joined the church and changed his name to Thi'sl, now a Christian artist with more positive influences.

Thi'sl has released five studio albums and has been featured on Lecrae's Grammy-winning project, Gravity. In addition to his music career, Thi'sl has been involved in community outreach in St. Louis, especially after the officer-involved killing of Michael Brown and the riots that followed in the St. Louis neighborhood of Ferguson. Thi'sl encouraged the church and community to work together for healing and urged a peaceful response to injustice, and together professional golfer Bubba Watson, helped to raise and donate $25,000 to repair vandalism and replace stolen electronics from Ferguson schools.
